The legal maxim volenti non fit injuria is Latin for “to a willing person, it is not a wrong.” It holds the meaning of voluntary assumption of risk: if a party intentionally places themselves in a position where they are aware some harm may come to them, they are unable to seek damages. This is the philosophy I apply to my artistic development. If I voluntarily expose my most vulnerable self to the world through my work, I cannot be injured. The vivid color combinations and whimsical interpretations of my materials are a playful invitation to join me in dissecting my evolving understanding of my race, gender, and sexuality.
Lately, my work has been focusing on my relationship between past and present: the inheritance from both parents and ancestors and the expectation of tradition. This not only informs the subjects of my work, but the materials as well. I mainly use recycled materials, fully integrating the concept of continuance. |
